Clap Your Hands & The National - Iron Horse - 9/8/05

I've see tons of shows in my life but I never saw what happened last night at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton. I actually got to witness what happens when a band gets caught in the wake of another band's success.

The show was billed as "The National with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah opening for them". However, with the steamroller success of CYHSY, it wound up being "CYHSY with The National closing for them".

I got down there shortly before showtime and headed straight to the bathroom after the 2-hour drive. The bathroom situation at the Iron Horse sucks. Two single-toilet unisex bathrooms for the entire crowd and with Smith College nearby, the shows there have a high percentage of ladies. This all adds up to some long lines snaking through the basement. Well, as I got towards the front of the line, CYHSY's Alec Ounsworth comes sheepishly up to the front of the line and says "Uh, I have to play upstairs soon. Do you mind if I cut in line. I don't know what else to do." Of course, everyone lets him go to the front and do his business. On the way out, I asked Alec if he was starting right away and if I'd have time to make it to the bathroom. He stared at me for a moment, laughed and said, "I'll wait for you. We won't start until your upstairs." It was kind of funny and true to his word, I didn't miss a single note of the show.

I don't think the place was sold out but it was close. There were a lot of people there and the energy in the room was pretty high. They opened with a new song but as soon as they launched into "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" the room started bouncing. They sounded great. I had read the review on Said the Gramaphone about their show in Montreal being kind of tired so my expectations were lower than they had been. However, I didn't see any signs of them being tired or bored. As they poured through about 40 minutes of songs from their album and three new tunes (all three sounded as good as the released tunes; no "Satan Said Dance"), you could tell that people were very familiar with the album and there to see CYHSY. What I wasn't expecting was the mass exodus following their set.

I know CYHSY are very hot right now but The National has a damn good album out which I was excited to hear live. But I was in the strict minority. About 3/4 of the crowd emptied out of the place taking with them all of the juice out of the atmosphere. What had been a fun raucus show quickly turned into the equivalent of a band practicing for a handful of friends. Hell, the band members of CYHSY probably made up about 10% of the remaining crowd. I haven't seen an exodus like that following an opening band since Neutral Milk Hotel opened a Merge showcase at The Knitting Factory after the release of On Avery Island. But that was more understandable since it was part of CMJ and people are expected to float from show to show.

After about 20 minutes, The National took the stage and played a decent although a bit understandably unenthusiastic set. It's a shame because they are a good band with good songs. A lot of their songs are slow build-ups into loud finishes which can be tough to pull off live if the song gets rushed. But they showed a lot of control and did really nice versions of them. They played most of what I wanted to hear off of Alligator except for "Mr. November" and "Looking for Astronauts". One note about The National, lead singer, Matt Berninger is one tall dude. He has to be the tallest front man I've seen since that guy from Archers of Loaf towered over crowds in the 90's.

However, the most interesting aspect of the show was the akwardness between songs when it was painfully silent. Silence in startling contrast to the rowdy whoops, shouting and applause that CYHSY received between tunes. You could even hear the sound of the mic being placed back into the mic stand; it was that dead between songs. Plus, people continued to file out throughout the show.

Well, it came to the end of the set and as the band left the stage, Berninger left the stage, went out the door and just kept going. There was enough of us clapping to bring the rest of the band back for the obligatory encore but the akwardness from earlier became downright embarassing as we watched the band try to figure out what had happened to Berninger. Finally, one of the guitarists went to look for him. A minute later the guitarist returned empty-handed saying, "I checked out on the street but I didn't see him anywhere". This was followed by more uneasy moments as the band tried to figure out what to do. They saw Alec from CYHSY sitting at the bar and asked him to sing with them but he declined. They finally decided to do a number just instrumentally but I guess the drummer didn't want to so he got up and left. The bass player then sat behind the drum kit and the remaining members did a brief instrumental number before getting out of there themsleves. You can see the scene in the last picture here. They could call this line-up a side project...The National Doughnut...basically, The National with a big hole in the middle.

It was kind of sad to watch but also amazing. It was like the scene in Spinal Tap at the Air Force base dance when the band members started quiting on stage. It certainly had the "car wreck watching sensation" going on.

The thing I keep thinking about is that this is the beginning of a tour that is going to run across the country for the next month and a half. If this was The National's reaction to it now, what happens when they've dealt with these kinds of crowds for thirty straight days. This tour could turn out to be a mess. Perhaps they could flip-flop the bill and let The National open for CYHSY. Didn't that happen with a Cheap Trick tour following the release of Dream Police?

Wow, Murph. Quite a story.

I know that in Chicago this bill is playing in a really small space and had to add an earlier show because the first sold out. Imagine having to go through that twice in one night? Yowch.

Oh. That will be brutal. I hope for The National's sake that their relationships with each other are solid. This kind of crap would make tiny fissures grow into chasms.

Ouch. I feel sorry for those guys. They really didn't deserve that, but what are you going to do? You can't force the crowd to stick around.

I blame the CYHASY! hype generated by the blogosphere. ;-)

Flatlander said...

HA! I blame the blogosphere for not hyping The National enough.

Seriously, I'm not pissed at The National but I think it would have been very cool of them to give a kick-ass show to those that stayed rather than walking out on the encore. Why punish those that stayed for the fact that others left?

By the way, was the spastic dancing Dockers guy there? :D

Flatlander said...

It's funny that you mention that because I was noticing a lot of people dancing at the show. I wondered if there was perhaps a bit of a boomarang effect going on.

Maybe a lot of people saw the video and thought it was stupid how he was being made fun of and said I'm going to go dance. There was even one guy doing a small pogo using a railing in front of me (ala the Dockers guy).

Great report & photos. That must have been crzy weird to witness.

The first Chicago show is just the National...not Clap Your Hands, so it should be fine. I got to see the Bowery Ballroom show in Manhattan on Friday and it was the opposite of what you describe. The crowd was way more into the National, but then the National are popular in New York -- been in the top 5 at my favorite record store in brooklyn since April. It will probably vary from city to city. It does sound like Northhampton was particularly bad. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Is there any truth to the rumour that the Violent Femmes are suing Clap your hands and say Yeah for ripping off their lead singer?

The same thing happened at South Street Seaport when CYHSY opened for Devotchka. After CYHSY a large portion of the audience left before Devotchka started playing.

I had a number of people come to me while I was waiting for the show to start to ask who was opening for whom.

I heard from a friend who saw the show in Philly on Saturday. Some people left after CYHSY, but not many.

I'm now gonna go see them in cleveland because i love a trainwreck.

I was at this show, my first time to see any of these bands. I'm from Indiana but visit NYC pretty often, and a good friend from the NY turned me on to The National last year. I struggle to understand your report.

First, the mass exodus was to go outside and smoke. I'm from a state where smoking is still permitted indoors, unfortunately. So I had to ask a bartender where everyone was going.
Yes, it seemed that half the place emptied between sets. BUT...it was probably 90% full for The National (who didn't come on until 11pm). Folks weren't fleeing the upcoming band, they just stepped out to smoke, and a few went home.

Second, the lead singer is a bit over 6' tall. He was standing in the crowd for the openers, so it wasn't that difficult to tell. You must have been thrown off by the fact that the guitarist brothers are extremely short. They probably don't go over 5'6".

I think you're right about weird stuff going down at the end. But the singer was obviously nice and drunk. So what if he was done after a nice long set? Wasn't this their first show since returning from Europe?

I just really disagree with your review of the show. I'd give The National a huge thumbs up for the show they put on. It was fantastic. Both opening acts (Qatsi also performed) struggle with a live set because of the awkward, strained, high-pitched vocals from their lead men. It was quite a contrast from The National's baritone vocals. Unbelievable that Matt pulls off those vocals live.

Excellent show by The National, all around.

Jason,

We'll have to disagree because a lot more than "a few" went home. The "pit" in front of the stage was packed for CYHSY and I could have spun around with my arms sticking out without hitting anyone during The National's set. A lot of people went home.

As for Berninger's height, he seemed tall to me but your point about the guitarists being short may have skewed my perception. However, he sure seemed like a tall guy.

As for him being drunk, I didn't notice that he was drunk but this was the only time I'd ever seen them. So, I don't have anything to compare it to. His twisting, standing up on his tippy-toes and general "expressive behavior" didn't seem all that different than what a typical lead singer might do. But perhaps he was blotto. I have no idea.

You guys seem to have the shows confused. Jason is talking about the Warsaw show in Brooklyn and Flatlander is talking about the Iron Horse show in Northhampton. It doesn't surprise me frankly that a lot of people left after CYHSY in Northhampton as 4 out of 5 of them are from Mass. so there may have been friends and family AND it is a smaller music market where a band like the National who are well established in major US and European cities may not be well known -- or even known at all. CYHSY, on the other hand, with all of the Pitchfork and Blog attention they are getting probably draws out the trendy hipsters anywhere they play now. They are blowing up in the way ...relatively speaking of course.

But the National is one of the best live bands I have ever seen. I love CYHSY's album but they are not yet a great livve band. It does sound like this night was an exception to the rule concerning the NAtional. Oh well. Too bad for Northhampton I guess.

Interesting report, I've been hearing that this has been happening everywhere. That's just how things happen when a buzz band catches fire. Don't feel bad for the national, they played a mostly sold-out show at the mercury lounge a month or two ago. Magnolia electric company experienced the same phenomenon a few weeks ago in philadeplphia and when I asked jason about it he could've cared less. The National would've sold out the bowery without clap your hands opening for them, it was just a nice surprise to be able to see them both.

As for the crowd leaving, no such luck at bowery, it was as hard if not harder to find a spot to stand during the national than CYHSY. It seemed more like the fans rotated for each band with the majority of people being there to see the national, who put on a far superior show anyway.

I follow the national closely and I know they sold out two Mercury Lounges on their own in advance in June (equivalent to one Bowery from what I can tell) and the Bowery show was mostly sold out before CYHSY was added. Why people wouldn't want to hear both bands is insane. Good thing for the National they have several dates without the Clap. And I bet they are looking forward to their next European tour where their audience is much bigger.

well what do you know? pitchfork chooses the national over cyhsy! this is all just madness. check it out.

everyone needs to f-ing watch these two bands. both deserve it. get your money's worth for christ's sake.

Saw the two in Newport, KY (the Cincinnati show) last night. The crowd was great for both, but The National were absolutely unbelievable. Matt, the lead singer, ended up climbing from a speaker into the 2nd floor balcony at the end of their set, only to return through the main entrance for their encore, which was the best song I've ever heard live ("About Today"). Amazing. And everyone I talked to after the show was saying the same things. No one should feel sorry for The National touring with CYHSY. The National hold their own as one of the best bands in the world. Ask Europe.

Thank you, very interesting!

I noticed this old review of CYHSY. I like the National too. Nemo (a Brooklyn, NY based band) is putting out a record next year which people are already saying is going to be huge. My sister heard some preview tracks and said it's up there with both of these bands. Love, Marcia
