Vermont Record Sales

Seven Days, the alternative newspaper for Burlington, charts the top ten albums sold over the last week in local independent record stores. Here are a few of the charts:

Buch Spieler, Montpelier

1 Coldplay -- X & Y
2 Madeleine Peyroux -- Careless Love
3 Van Morrison -- Magic Time
4 Ray LaMontagne -- Trouble
5 Ryan Adams & the Cardinals -- Cold Roses
6 Joss Stone -- Mind, Body & Soul
7 Bruce Springsteen -- Devils & Dust
8 John Prine -- Fair & Square
9 Jack Johnson -- In Between Dreams
10 Anna Nalick -- Wreck of the Day

Pure Pop, Burlington

1 White Stripes -- Get Behind Me Satan
2 Gorillaz -- Demon Days
3 String Cheese Incident -- One Step Closer
4 Coldplay -- X & Y
5 Matisyahu -- Live at Stubbs
6 Beck -- Guero
7 Arcade Fire -- Arcade Fire EP
8 Slug & Murs -- Felt 2: Tribute to Lisa Bonet
9 Grateful Dead -- Truckin' Up to Buffalo
10 Willie Nelson -- Countryman

Exile on Main St., Barre

1 John Mayall -- Road Dogs
2 Joe Perry -- Joe Perry
3 George Strait -- Somewhere Down In Texas
4 Ying Yang Twins -- USA: United States of Atlanta
5 Kelly Clarkson -- Breakaway
6 Jimmy Buffett -- License to Chill
7 Norah Jones -- Come Away With Me
8 CKY -- An Answer Can Be Found
9 Michael Buble -- It's Time
10 Green Day -- American Idiot

Vermont Book Shop, Middlebury

1 Big Joe Burrell -- I'm a Lucky So and So?
2 Grace Potter & the Nocturnals -- Nothing But the Water
3 Madeleine Peyroux -- Careless Love
4 Fred Astaire -- Finest Hour
5 Pink Martini -- Hang on Little Tomato
6 Old Crow Medicine Show -- O.C.M.S.
7 Various Artists -- Celtic Woman
8 Pink Floyd -- Dark Side of the Moon
9 Gorillaz -- Demon Days
10 Original Broadway Cast Recording -- Wicked

So, the only album to show up on three different shops' list is Gorillaz' Demon Days. The only other album that appears on more than one list is Coldplay's X & Y. Everything else is unique to that particular store which is, along with the high turnover on the Audioscrobbler lists, more evidence of the fickleness of Vermont music fans and lack of a dominant music trend.

I'll have to stop into Pure Pop if I'm ever in Burlington.

I think you'd like it. It's your classic independent, below street level, college-town record store. UVM's students make up about 20% of Burlington's population so Pure Pop see a fair amount of traffic.

I think you'd also like Buch Spieler with it's sizeable world beat selection. Another cool store.

Pure Pop is probably the best record shop I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot. Actually, there was one store in Providence near Brown University that may have been better, but it has since gone away.

Buch Spieler - That's a tough one. I like them and try to support them because they're local, but the fact of the matter is that they seriously lack indie selection, and their prices are too high. But it's a catch-22 for them...Their prices are high because their volume is so low.
