Playoff Baseball | UPDATE

Following a loss to the Torrington Twisters this afternoon, the Vermont Mountaineers finished second in the Northern Division of the NECBL and will open the playoffs at home on Thursday night against their rivals, the Keene Swamp Bats. Game time is 6:30 at Recreation Field in Montpelier.

It'll be a huge crowd so get there early. There was 3,250 fans there on Tuesday for the final regular season home game. So, I think there'll be as many Thursday night and likely more.

On a related Mountaineers note, here's a conversation I had with my son the other day that perfectly captures the innocence of a five-year-old:

Me: Hey A, guess what?

A: What, Dad?

Me: Since the Mountaineers didn't have a game on Monday, they had a party at Curt Smith's house on Sunday night. [Note: Curt Smith is my son's favorite player. So, the idea of a party at his house caused my son's eyes to pop out of his head.]

A: Ooooooh. What do you think they did at the party?

Me: I don't know. What do you think they did?

A: I bet Curt has a batting cage hidden in the woods behind his house and they hit baseballs.

Me: Do you think there were any girls there?

A: Yeh. Their moms. No. Actually, they can all drive themselves. So, no. There weren't any girls there.

Me: Do you think they had anything to eat or drink?

A: [As he shakes his booty side to side] Oh, yeh. French fries and cocktails. Yeh!

UPDATE: The Mountaineers won 7-3 tonight. They now travel to Keene for Game 2 of the three game series tomorrow night. If necessary, Game 3 will be back in Montpelier on Saturday night.

Despite winning, the Mountaineers didn't look very sharp. Two passed balls. A wild pitch. Some errors and a runner got picked off first during a rally. They got bailed out by a strong outing from the starting pitcher, Alex Curry, and some clutch hitting. They'll need to play better than tonight to win the championship again.
