Blogosphere Hype Rant

Analog Giant has an interesting post up about overhyped bands. I disagree with him about some of the bands he mentions but it's a good point. Ever since the first cavemen bang a few rocks together, there have been overhyped musicians. However, it happens a lot faster and more often with the preponderance of music blogs though.

Having said that, I don't think too much hype is going to hurt or kill the music scene. It's just forever a part of it.

By the way, if you want to see a good movie about music hype, check out the documentary about the Seattle scene in the early 90's called Hype.

You think it's bad over here? Try the British press sometime. Remember any of the absurd hype over The Strokes, or the Vines being "the perfect blend of the Beatles and Nirvana"? They've turned Kings Of Leon into heroes, ffs. The whole race to get on the jock of the "next big thing" is always going to be there; it might be just more intensified or absurd like everything else these days. As a result, you're going to deal with more digusting, lengthy and unjustified slurping.

I'm personally waiting for how they can top the Beatles/Nirvana hype comment. What's next? "Jesus Christ couldn't come down off the cross and make music this good!"

PS - If you'd like some backlash against blowhard reviewers, check out bigempire.com and the Filthy Critic's movie reviews. He always has a bit called "Hey whore, how's the whoring going?" for these clowns that gush over every movie released.
