My wife recently cleaned up our home office which meant huge stacks of CDs that had been piling up on our desk were stuffed into a filing cabinet. After ignoring the piles for months, I immediately became interested in the stacks once they were gone and started rummaging through the file cabinet to see what had been swept away.
One of the gems that I came across was a disc a friend had sent to me a few years ago. It was a recording of Neutral Milk Hotel's final show. After Jeff Mangum's nervous breakdown and the dissolution of the band, Chris Knox, asked Jeff Mangum to play a show at the King's Arms Tavern in Auckland, New Zealand. The show was billed as the "World of Wild Beards Incorporated" but was basically Jeff Mangum playing solo with just a guitar. For that reason, the show is more similar to Mangum's Live at Jittery Joe's concert album from 1997. The difference is that he seems to be playing an electric guitar here rather than the acoustic guitar at Jittery Joe's.
Unfortunately, besides a few walk-on guest appearances, Mangum has never played live again.
