The Incredible Shrinking Concert T-Shirts

What the hell is going on with concert t-shirts these days? They are getting smaller by the show. Pretty soon, they'll just fit teddy bears.

Is anyone else noticing this?

I like to support the bands that come through so I always make a point of buying a CD or shirt from the band. However, I often have all of the band's CDs. So, I wind up getting a lot of shirts. Lately though, the shirts seem to be thinner and thinner cotton and smaller and smaller cuts.

Being 6'4", I always wear an XL shirt. But check out the size of the shirt I got from The Spinto Band last February. Their shirt is on the left while my latest shirt from Bo is on the right. Both shirts are XL. Bo's shirts are good benchmarks because they always fit just right. When I wear that Spinto shirt, it's tighter than my skin and completely uncomfortable. My wife now uses it as a night shirt.

This is just one example of many. It seems like 75% of the shirts I've gotten over the last year fall into this category. My first thought was that the shirts Bo was using are a lot more expensive and perhaps bands are trying to make a few extra bucks. However, I checked out this site for prices on having shirts printed. It seems that for an order of about 100 shirts, the thick cotton expensive beefy shirts are $7.23 per shirt. For the cheapest thin cruddy shirts, it's $5.83 per shirt. A savings of a mere $1.40 per shirt! Come on. Charge me an extra $2 and sell me a t-shirt that is comfortable to wear.

I feel your pain! It's crap tshirts lately. It would be nice if they lasted past one wash and didn't choke you to death. I always check the quality of the tshirts now before I buy, American Apparal is good, everything else is to lightweight.

American Apparel is the problem. Their sizes are INSANE. Maybe their little tiny porn model designers can fit into them, but normal people can't. Emily asked for a women's extra large tour shirt at a Decemberists show and Chris Funk (who cannot himself wear American Apparel shirts) handed her what would be a small from any other shirt company.

Ye, they are American-made and yes they have good business practices and all that (sexual harrassment issues aside), but the sizes are stupid and I'm sure that's what you're noticing, Murph.

Yeah, AA seems to run small, BUT Fruit of the Loom run WAYYYYYY too big! We did a run of FOTL shirts, and ran out of the important sizes because the large was more like an extra large. xxx, KHMatthew

Yes, I have the same problem. This may be because some shirts are made in sweatshop conditions using lowest quality cotton and the like. I've bought XL tees that have stayed the same size over a number of years while newer ones... I can't wear them after one wash! e.g. Sterolab's Oscillons from the Anti-Sun. Even some shirts advertised as XL are only about medium size.

Here's the weird thing...I received a t-shirt in the mail today from US Soccer. Just a simple t-shirt with the team crest on the chest. The thing is friggin' gigantic. I have to send it back because it's too big!

So, let's recap...concert t-shirts are shrinking and soccer t-shirts are growing.
